Taipei to Sun Moon Lake: Taichung Train and Bus Guide

Plan Taipei to Sun Moon Lake with a train to Taichung and onward bus, comparing HSR and TRA arrival points, lake stops and return connections.

TaiwanTrain is an independent service, not the official THSR or TRA website. Where booking is offered, availability confirmation and ticket fulfilment are manual. Payment does not guarantee ticket issuance. Check the operator’s current timetable and ticket rules for your travel date.

Sun Moon Lake has no direct THSR or TRA station at the lakeside. A common rail-based approach from Taipei is to travel to Taichung and continue by road. Plan the train, bus and final connection to your accommodation separately rather than searching for a single through train to the lake.

Choose HSR Taichung or central TRA Taichung

THSR Taichung is in Wuri and is different from the central TRA Taichung station. High-speed rail is useful for the intercity leg from Taipei, but compare the complete journey and current connecting bus departure. A TRA arrival in central Taichung gives a different transfer location. Check the designated bus boarding point for the station you actually use.

Check the current bus route to the lake

Use the Sun Moon Lake tourism authority’s Getting Here information to find current road connections and then verify the operating bus company’s timetable. Check the boarding stop, lake destination, payment method and any reservation requirement. Do not assume every departure serves every lakeside stop or that a bus seat is guaranteed because a train ticket has been purchased.

Match the arrival stop to your accommodation

Shuishe and Ita Thao are different lakeside areas. Find your hotel on a map and ask which current stop and final connection are appropriate. Some itineraries need a further local bus, taxi, walk or boat service. A boat is an optional transport choice with its own operating conditions, not an automatic part of the train or bus ticket.

Compare a day trip with an overnight visit

A day trip requires enough time for the outward road leg, sightseeing and a dependable return connection. Road congestion, queues and weather can reduce your time at the lake. An overnight visit offers more flexibility but still needs a plan back to Taichung. Check the last useful bus before selecting a reserved return train, and keep a fallback if the road journey runs late.

Find the matching 6670 service

The Sun Moon Lake route is served by the 6670 bus family, with variations in origin, stops and destination. Select a departure that serves your actual Taichung boarding point and lake stop. Check the current timetable and reservation instructions with Nantou Bus. Do not assume a bus to Shuishe also reaches Ita Thao, or that the final departure fits a reserved train back to Taipei.
