Taiwan Train Guide: THSR, TRA and Trip Planning

Plan Taiwan train travel with a clear guide to THSR, TRA, station names, major corridors and reliable pre-trip checks.

TaiwanTrain is an independent service, not the official THSR or TRA website. Where booking is offered, availability confirmation and ticket fulfilment are manual. Payment does not guarantee ticket issuance. Check the operator’s current timetable and ticket rules for your travel date.

Choose a network before comparing tickets

For western intercity travel, compare THSR with TRA using the total trip to your destination. For Hualien and Taitung, start with TRA. Airport MRT, urban metro and Alishan Forest Railway are separate systems. A journey can need more than one ticket and more than one station transfer.

Stations that change your itinerary

Taichung HSR connects with TRA Xinwuri; central TRA Taichung is a different station. Tainan HSR connects with TRA Shalun for trains toward central Tainan. In Kaohsiung, THSR Zuoying, TRA Xinzuoying and metro R16 form an interchange; TRA Zuoying and Kaohsiung stations are different stops. Save the operator and full station name with each reservation.

Understand the two main rail systems

THSR and TRA are separate networks with separate ticket rules. THSR is usually considered for fast travel between major western cities. TRA serves many city-centre stations, regional destinations and eastern Taiwan. Neither name should be used as a generic label for every train in Taiwan.

Read a Taiwan rail map correctly

Start with the cities you want to visit, then mark whether each stop is served by THSR, TRA, or both. On the western side, the two networks may appear close on a map while their stations are physically separate. On the east coast, trip planning generally relies on TRA rather than THSR.

Build a realistic itinerary

Plan each segment separately and include the transfer between a rail station and the actual neighbourhood, hotel or attraction. Taipei has an integrated central hub, while Taichung, Tainan and Kaohsiung require closer attention to the distinction between HSR and TRA station names.

Pre-trip checklist

  • Confirm whether the journey uses THSR, TRA, or a separate tourism railway.
  • Check the full station name because HSR and TRA stations may be in different parts of the same city.
  • Recheck current operator information shortly before departure.
  • Allow enough time for transfers between rail systems and local transport.

FAQ

What is the difference between THSR and TRA?

THSR is the high-speed system focused on the western corridor. TRA is the conventional railway network serving a wider range of cities, towns and eastern Taiwan.

Why do some cities show two stations?

Several cities have separate HSR and TRA stations, so the full station name and local transfer are part of the journey plan.

Can one ticket cover all Taiwan rail systems?

No general ticket should be assumed to cover THSR, TRA, Airport MRT and city metros. Check the exact product and every segment.
