Hualien to Taitung by Train: East Rift Valley Guide

Plan Hualien to Taitung by TRA and prepare for an east-coast journey through valleys, towns and changing service conditions.

TaiwanTrain is an independent service, not the official THSR or TRA website. Where booking is offered, availability confirmation and ticket fulfilment are manual. Payment does not guarantee ticket issuance. Check the operator’s current timetable and ticket rules for your travel date.

Travel through the East Rift Valley

The Hualien–Taitung railway runs through the East Rift Valley, not continuously beside the shoreline. Stations such as Yuli, Chishang, Guanshan and Luye can support a slower itinerary, but not every train calls at each one. Search each intended stop and book separate segments when breaking the journey. A through ticket is not automatically a flexible hop-on pass.

Taitung Station is not the downtown bus hub

TRA Taitung Station is outside the central city. Check local bus, taxi or accommodation pickup options for your arrival time. A coastal-road destination may need a separate road journey from the railway. Plan the final connection and the next day’s departure before choosing a short transfer, particularly when travelling with luggage.

Pre-trip checklist

  • Confirm whether the journey uses THSR, TRA, or a separate tourism railway.
  • Check the full station name because HSR and TRA stations may be in different parts of the same city.
  • Recheck current operator information shortly before departure.
  • Allow enough time for transfers between rail systems and local transport.
