Eastern Taiwan by Train: Hualien, Taitung and the Valley

Plan Taiwan east coast rail travel through Hualien and Taitung with TRA, flexible stops and current service checks.

TaiwanTrain is an independent service, not the official THSR or TRA website. Where booking is offered, availability confirmation and ticket fulfilment are manual. Payment does not guarantee ticket issuance. Check the operator’s current timetable and ticket rules for your travel date.

Use rail for the valley and road for some coastal stops

TRA connects Hualien and Taitung through the East Rift Valley. The name east coast does not mean every kilometre is beside the sea or that every coastal attraction has a station. Mark rail stops and road destinations separately. For a multi-stop itinerary, check each train’s stopping pattern and arrange local transport from the selected station.

Build a flexible overnight route

Hualien, Yuli, Chishang, Guanshan, Luye and Taitung can be planning anchors where the chosen service stops. Avoid promising a particular sea view or seat side. Compare arrival time with accommodation pickup and local transport hours. Recheck the railway and destination access notices before leaving, especially following disruptive weather or seismic events.

Pre-trip checklist

  • Confirm whether the journey uses THSR, TRA, or a separate tourism railway.
  • Check the full station name because HSR and TRA stations may be in different parts of the same city.
  • Recheck current operator information shortly before departure.
  • Allow enough time for transfers between rail systems and local transport.
