Alishan Forest Railway: Chiayi Access and Trip Planning

Plan an Alishan Forest Railway visit while separating it from THSR and TRA and checking current mountain service notices.
TaiwanTrain is an independent service, not the official THSR or TRA website. Where booking is offered, availability confirmation and ticket fulfilment are manual. Payment does not guarantee ticket issuance. Check the operator’s current timetable and ticket rules for your travel date.
Chiayi access and the mountain railway
Alishan Forest Railway uses its own ticketing system. Its Chiayi access is by TRA Chiayi Station, not THSR Chiayi Station; an HSR arrival therefore needs a separate transfer. Distinguish the main line toward Alishan from the short forest-area branches, such as the Zhushan sunrise service. A ticket for one service does not automatically include the others.
Check the operating section and return
Use the Forest Railway office’s current timetable, ticketing calendar and service notices for the intended date. Mountain weather and engineering work can change which sections operate. If planning sunrise, check the announced departure and ticket arrangements for that day. Confirm accommodation, road alternatives and the last practical return before choosing a same-day connection to an intercity train.
Pre-trip checklist
- Confirm whether the journey uses THSR, TRA, or a separate tourism railway.
- Check the full station name because HSR and TRA stations may be in different parts of the same city.
- Recheck current operator information shortly before departure.
- Allow enough time for transfers between rail systems and local transport.
